Taking Small Steps to Reach Your Goals

I feel it is easiest when I break my goals down into steps. First I determine which goal I want to obtain. Then I will start making a list of the actions and steps I need to take to reach that objective. After these steps are determined, I will time-block each step, giving 10 minutes for step 1 and 45 minutes for step 2, for example. I also understand that sometimes we all need a little help. Do not be afraid to reach out to the people you need to assist you on getting to your end goal. If I should fall short of my goal, I make sure I do not beat myself up. I reassess my steps, make the changes and start again, until I reach that goal.

Focus On Yourself and Relationships with Journaling

Daily journal entries can help you focus on yourself and then some. Keeping a journal not only keeps you focused on yourself, but also makes you aware of what aspects within your life you can adjust to improve daily life. As for relationships: Have you evaluated what you want and need from your work or your relationship? If the answer is no, then I would suggest you do a brain dump.

Do this by category: needs, must-haves and perfect world desires. Once you have completed your list, begin to rate your items. Use a number scale of one to five (five being the highest). Once you’ve finished putting a value next to each item, count them up. See what the points are for each category. The numbers will give you an idea of how your needs are being met.

If you have made your list, then do your calculations. The great thing about this method is that you are able to keep the emotions at bay and let the numbers be the roadmap to your decision. When you’ve completed the exercise above, you will get an idea of where you are in your situation. If you are not getting what you need, want and/ or desire, the answer can be plain and simple. If you are getting your basic needs met and have what you want, but are low on desire, then you have to determine if those two columns are enough to keep you happy and satisfied.

Keeping Goals In Focus

I am someone who always has goals. If I ever run out of goals, I know I need to take a look at what I want out of my life and start developing a plan to reach that goal. Know that the best way to start is by taking baby steps to achieve that goal. For example, if you would like to work in a specific field, you have to have that training. If you want to run a marathon, you have to train. If you want to lose weight, you have to change your lifestyle and eating habits. Nothing happens overnight.

Self-Improvement is Infinite

I believe life is a journey. We are put on this earth to learn, teach and improve our lives and the lives of those around us. These lessons are not always easy ones and rarely happen in the blink of an eye. Wake up each day grateful for the new day and make it the best. Self-improvement is a lifelong endeavor. But remember, you must keep going or you become stagnant.
